LOCALS KNOW:

Newberg is in the Chehalem Valley. It’s pronounced shuh-HAY-lem. It’s a native term and means “valley of flowers”. You’ll find the name used in lots of places around the area.

Understanding Newberg’s Layout

Before choosing a place to stay, it’s helpful to understand Newberg’s layout.

The city centers around Highway 99W, which connects Portland to wine country. I mentally divide the town into three different areas.

The historic downtown features historic buildings, shops, and restaurants. A newer commercial zone sprawls east along Highway 99, where you’ll find your chain hotels, fast food, and grocery stores.

The outskirts of town quickly transition into fields and vineyards. This is greater Newberg, where dozens of wineries lie nestled among the hills. Stunning views and countryside retreats are just minutes from town.

Luxury Accommodations

No doubt about it, The Allison Inn & Spa sets the standard for luxury in Oregon wine country. Draped across acres of gardens and manicured grounds, this resort offers 85 elegantly appointed rooms and suites.

It’s a beautiful facility, the architecture and grounds are well done. They’ve also done a great job at making it feel a little secluded even though it sits just on the edge of town.

Some rooms have vineyard views, and you can walk to nearby Rain Dance Vineyards directly from the inn..

Highlights include:

  • JORY Restaurant, featuring excellent food and an extensive wine list
  • Spa with treatment rooms and indoor swimming pool
  • Concierge service
  • Fireplaces and terrace/balcony for each room
  • Lots of cozy nooks and outdoor spaces to relax and have a drink

Not to sound like a commercial, but when you want the best, the Allison really does deliver.

Because of the proximity to where I work, I talk with a lot of travelers staying at the Setting Inn and reviews are always positive. The setting is tranquil, the experience upscale.

It’s a beautiful adults-only wine country BnB set on the north side of the Dundee Hills. The inn came under new ownership a few years ago and has really stepped up its presentation.

I’m always a big fan of outdoor areas to hang out and they have a bunch of options to sit and enjoy the view with a book or a drink (or both!).

The location is also excellent for wine tasting. The Dundee Hills and Chehalem Mountain regions are just minutes from your accommodation. In fact, some of these fantastic vineyards are visible from your room.

Highlights Include:

  • Communal areas including courtyard, lounge, and great room with fireplace
  • Simple but delicious breakfast box every morning
  • King size beds and Nespresso makers
  • Premier rooms have a soaking tub and fireplace

Mid-Range Hotels

There’s a small cluster of chain hotels in the newer part of town. There’s not a lot that separates them, but the Best Western generally has the best reviews and the Travelodge has the edge on cheaper prices.

Summer rates hover between $100-200/night (2025 rates).

They’re located along a busy stretch of Highway 99, so no views or romantic tranquility. Still, both options provide easy access to wine country and you could walk to the historic downtown if you wanted to.

The Best Western provides reliable, comfortable accommodations with decent amenities.

Its location near Highway 99W makes it convenient for both wine country exploration and business travel. Perfect for parents visiting during the school year too!

Amenities include:

  • Complimentary hot breakfast
  • Indoor pool and fitness center
  • Just a mile from George Fox University
  • Free parking and WiFi
  • Pet-friendly rooms available

Just down the street from the Best Western. Also popular with business travelers and university visitors.

Rates are definitely cheaper here, so it’s perfect if you’re just looking for something simple and reliable.

There’s lots of food options nearby. Breakfast is included, but you can also walk to the Black Bear Diner next door for something more substantial.

Amenities Include:

  • Indoor Pool
  • Free parking and WiFi
  • Fitness center
  • Pet friendly!

Boutique B&Bs

What a view! Perched atop Chehalem Mountain, this B&B offers truly Insta-worthy vistas of the valley below.

Chehalem Ridge guests leave gushing about the attentive staff and gourmet breakfasts. Visitors also appreciate the knowledge of local wineries, and you can even have the inn book your appointments for you.

Highlights Include:

  • Delicious homemade breakfasts
  • Private decks
  • Wine tasting itineraries booked by the hosts
  • Spacious, themed rooms

This is another perfect BnB for wine country getaways. Owned by Dan and Maureen DeFrancia, this charming property has plenty of modern comforts with thoughtful hospitality.

Guests rave about the generous, locally-sourced breakfasts and personalized details in each room.

Despite being just minutes from downtown Newberg, the vibe here is tranquil and relaxing.

Highlights Include:

  • Comfortable beds
  • Spacious rooms
  • King beds
  • Soaking tubs

And most importantly, the DeFrancia’s have earned their reputation as delightful and thoughtful hosts!

What are the best places to stay near vineyards?

What’s nice about this part of the Willamette Valley is that you are NEVER far from a picturesque vineyards! Any of the places listed above are within a 10 minute drive to rolling hills and scenic rows of vines.

If you’d really like to be in the middle of things, I recommend the following:

  • Vineyard View Inn
  • The Setting Inn
  • Some of the rooms at The Allison also have vineyard views.

Best Option if You Have an RV

You’re in luck! Newberg has a new RV Resort perfect for wine country visitors. Actually it’s in Dundee, but you can literally see one from the other.

Dundee Hills Resort is family run and gets lots of compliments for roomy sites, cleanliness and nice bathrooms. They also have some small cottages you can rent as well.

My friend’s parents stayed for a week this summer and were very complimentary.

There’s a vineyard across the street and a tasting room onsite.

Located south of Newberg, Champoeg is a historical site and campground about 15 min south of town.

There aren’t a lot of camping options in the area so the park fills up quickly in the summer. Make sure to reserve a spot well ahead of time!

Full hookups and a dump station.

Pet-Friendly Hotels in Newberg

Sometimes leaving your best buddy at home just isn’t an option. Unfortunately most of the smaller, boutique accommodations aren’t able to welcome pets.

Know Before You Go: Newberg Travel Guide and FAQ

  • Founded: 1889
  • Originally home to the Kalapuya people
  • Population: 25,000
  • Home to George Fox University
  • Located in Yamhill County
  • Home to over 60 wineries

How far is Newberg from Portland?

About 25 miles from downtown to Newberg. Plan on the drive taking about an hour, or 90 minutes during rush hour.

Is Newberg walkable? Do I need a car to visit Newberg?

I’d definitely recommend a car. The historic downtown is very walkable, but getting to lodging and wineries requires some wheels. If you’re flying into PDX, I recommend picking up your rental car there.

There is also a Yamhill County bus system, which I wouldn’t recommend for tourists.

locals know:

Uber and Lyft are available in town. Be aware that availability can be hit or miss once you get out into wine country! Don’t just assume you’ll find an easy ride home.

What about wine tours?

Yes! Hiring a driver to take you wine tasting is a great option. There are many solid options in the Newberg area. I’ve worked the most with Black Tie Tours and trust them to provide a quality experience.

You can pick the wineries yourself or have the tour company do it for you.

What are the best wineries to visit in Newberg, Oregon?

There are so many great options it’s almost criminal to narrow it down to a handful, but here’s my best attempt:

Best View- Jachter Family Wines
Best Sparkling – ROCO Winery
Most luxurious – Domaine Serene (in nearby Dundee)
Favorite Hidden Gem – Natalie’s Estate Winery

….and do I need reservations?

Reservations are required at some wineries, but many take walk-ins. Tables can fill up quickly on weekends and holidays, so I always recommend making a reservation no matter what. You can always call to cancel or reschedule if plans change.

What are the best places to eat in Newberg?

For a full list of my favorite places to eat, check out this post of best restaurants

My top favs include:

  • Rosemarino – Amazing and authentic Italian
  • The Newbergundian – French American comfort food
  • Wooden Heart – wood-fired pizzas and delicious appetizers

What’s the best Time to Visit Newberg?

Newberg’s peak season runs from May through October, with July and August being the most busy. This means pricing will be higher and reservations harder to get. But it also means nicer weather and more events to choose from.

What is the weather like?

Summers are warm and dry, with temps anywhere between 80-105° during the day. Winters are cool and foggy, although snow is rare and most days are above freezing. Think 48° and damp.

Spring and Fall can be all over the place. Obviously the closer to summer, the better chances of good weather. But Oregon weather is moody and it’s totally possible to have snow in March or an 80° day in October.

My favorite times of the year are June and October. The weather is less predictable during these months, but they’re also the most beautiful.
